How do I shop sustainably using The Beagle Button browser extension?

Accepted Answer

It’s as simple as adding The Beagle Button to your browser, e.g. Chrome, Firefox or Edge in just two clicks. A small Beagle Button icon will appear at the top of your browser. Then, simply shop as normal. When you’re on a product or service page, if we have a better alternative, we’ll pop up and tell you.

How do you find the best sustainable brands?

As you would expect, the team at Beagle are barking mad about sustainable shopping. We spend our waking hours searching for the best products online, and our sleeping hours dreaming about them. We’ve defined 5 key pillars of sustainability, and all of our products contribute to one or more. These pillars are: Minimising Emissions, Reducing Waste, Supporting Workers, Protecting Animals, Avoiding Chemicals. We prioritise products with low emissions as the climate crisis is an emergency which holds the biggest threat to humans and nature globally. We find products that support these pillars, using an evidence-based approach, using the latest data available and leveraging existing certifications wherever possible to make sure that these brands are really as good as they say they are. What exactly does sustainability mean when shopping online?

Great question! Many people have defined it in different ways and some have taken advantage of the vagueness of the term to “greenwash” shoppers. We define sustainability as products or services which minimise their impact on the planet, on people and on animals. We are particularly keen to find products that lower emissions as the climate crisis needs urgent attention. The great news is that brands who have put in the effort to lower their emissions have usually thought hard about all the aspects of their impact, from working conditions, chemicals to animal welfare. We know that everyone has aspects of sustainability that they are particularly passionate about. Within the Beagle Button extension, you can select your preferences and we will suggest alternatives that best match those preferences.

We’d love to hear from you! Please complete our brand partners signup form and let us know more about yourself. We’ll review all brands and products, applying our sustainability criteria to ensure they are genuinely good products for our users and for the planet.

Question 5

The Beagle Button is free - how does it make money?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Beagle is free for users! Instead of charging users to use it or selling their data, we take a small commission from the sustainable retailers that we have approved. 
We never have, or will, accept payments from retailers who want to be listed, or to be prioritised, as our research process to find the best, most sustainable products in each category is completely independent. There’s no upfront cost to retailers - we only get paid when a user chooses to go with our recommendation and clicks through to buy that brand.

How do you plant your trees, and how many have you planted so far?

We partner with Ecologi to plant our trees, and you can see how many trees we have planted on their site.

How do preferences work?

Accepted Answer

Within your account in the Beagle Button, you can select the sustainability tags which mean the most to you. E.g. “Plastic Free”, “Vegan”, “Locally Made”. Then when you’re browsing online, we’ll dig into our database of products and services to find an alternative that best matches your preferences. We’re working super hard to build our database out, but there may be times where we don’t have an alternative that perfectly matches the specific preferences you have selected. In this case, we’ll show you the next best alternatives that we have. Rest assured, anything that we show you has still been rigorously tested to ensure it matches our sustainability criteria.

How do I pick what interests me?

You can select what aspects of sustainability you care the most about in the preferences pane. Pick between vegan, plastic-free, cruelty-free, organic, long-lasting, ethically made, low-carbon, womem-run businesses, minority owned businesses, brands that give back and products that are made in the UK. 
Download the Beagle Button extension, click the Beagle icon to open the extension window and press the profile icon in the top left corner and select “Pick your preferences”. Select the attributes you are interested in and we'll use this information to show you more relevant products.
